A True Renaissance Woman

Classically trained and highly educated, Brandi Jacques has dedicated her life to the arts. With a Ph.D. and Master of Music from the University of Toronto, and a Bachelor of Music Performance from Queen's University, and additional performance and pedagogy training through the Royal Conservatory of Music and Capilano University, Jacques is stacked with knowledge she's honed over years of hard work and training. Brandi has been a Teaching Artist of piano for over 35 years, giving creative expression to the works of “The Masters” and igniting the joy of music in students aged 2 - 92. At the same time, she has always been a maker, finding deep pleasure in the creative process, whether sewing, knitting, baking, painting, drawing, or throwing on the pottery wheel.

"My influences harken back to my childhood in rural British Columbia, Canada. My father is a biologist and a passionate environmentalist. He taught my sister and I to love the earth and to take care of it. We grew up in the country, rescuing toads and salamanders and caring for wounded wildlife if we happened upon it. We tended our flower, fruit and vegetable gardens. We often went camping. It was an idyllic childhood. Additionally, both of my parents are artistic, detail-oriented, and hard-working. They were the original DIYers. My Dad designed and helped build our house. My Mom would knit, crochet and sew our clothes. They taught me to notice details, to strive for excellence, and to feel completely comfortable creating things," she said.

Intersections have been a big part of her life; art and music are no exception. Relying on creativity, theory, and self-expression, these two creative modes of life reflect her inner self. â€‹Her style is boldly expressive yet intricately detailed, encompassing elements of realism, expressionism, impressionism, abstraction, and surrealism. Surreal elegance.

"I am fascinated with the expression of the fleeting moment: the ephemeral, the transitory, the impermanent. My current works attempt to describe the rapture and beauty of transient experiences. Nature is full of these moments: clouds billowing, mist drifting, water flowing, flowers blossoming, leaves and petals fluttering gently in the breeze, the play of sunlight and shadow, etc.

At the same time, I am captivated by records of our past: drawings, writings, parchments, manuscripts, glyphs. I feel drawn to historical artifacts and I love to explore and reinterpret phenomena such as music, various modes of notation, sculpture, architecture, and even the visual art of the great masters. Fleeting moments and echoes of the past come together in my imagination and the result on canvas can be abstract, surreal, and sometimes, both at once. My favorite modes of expression are mixed media and oil on canvas."

In addition to making art, Brandi teaches piano and works hard on her tennis game. She serves on the Board of Directors for both the Associated Artists of Winston-Salem and Project Space 411. Brandi is a proud supporter of the Winston-Salem Symphony, the Piedmont Opera, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Reynolda House & Gardens, and more. In her spare time, she likes to knit, read, and spend time with her daughter, husband, and their dog Lulu.
